Effective Promotion for Little Cost - Part 2
By
Keith Lee

Welcome Back to all my friends. This is the second of several articles that will contain marketing and promotion tips that can be very effective in promoting your site for little or no cost. Hopefully none of you got caught with your feet up on the desk.  As always, these tips are all proven techniques that do not include spamming.

Tip #3 – Building Effective Titles on Every page

The title of your website plays one of the most important roles in how your pages will show up in search engines. The title is part of, but not the same as, what are called “Meta Tags”. These two features are very important to how search engines see your site.

Most web page generating programs have a function that will place a title on each page as you create it without having to know how to do HTML to accomplish it. In the HTML code for your page, the first three lines should read:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>My Web Site</TITLE>

Your title tag should contain 5 to 7 keywords that best describe your site. If all you put in your title is the name of your site, you will likely be misplaced in search engines. This process usually takes some tweaking over time and few people get it right the first time, so don’t get discouraged.

The tag should be short and very precise as to content. The maximum number of characters should not exceed 60 including spaces.

Tip #4  - Meta Tags

As discussed in the previous tip, Meta Tags are how search engines see your site. Tags are not the only factor that search engines look at though. We will discuss that in a later article.

Again most site creation software will help you to generate tags for your pages. However, they do not put all the necessary tags into the document. So in order to get all the tags you should have you will have to do some text editing.

Tags that should be included on your pages are:
<title></title>
<meta name=”description” content=””>
<meta name=”keywords” content=””>
<meta name=”author” content=”One Dog Designs”>
<meta name=”revisit-after” content=”30 days”>
<meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow”>
<meta name=”rating” content=”general”>
<meta name=”copyright” content=”onedog.com”>
<meta name=”distribution” content=”global”>

I did not fill in the description or the keywords content. I will discuss that now.

The Description tag should be one sentence of not more then 160 characters that describes what the site is about. It should contain some of the keywords from the title tag discussed earlier.

The Keywords tag should be a collection of words that apply to the content of your site. These should be words that are contained in the site that you believe will be searched for by users looking for the products or services you are offering. This tag should not contain more then 800 characters.

Now that you have all of your tags in place and properly formatted, your site is ready to be submitted to search engines. Good Luck and happy searching.

OK, now get to work on these two and check back in a couple of days for the next couple of tips. In a couple of months you will see major improvement in your hits and it will have cost you little to nothing.

Next up…..  Logos, and Slogans

Enjoy and see you again soon.
