This will the third of several
articles that will contain marketing and promotion tips that can be very
effective in promoting your site for little or no cost. Tip for reading
these articles. Position your desk so that you are facing the door. This
way when the boss walks in you have 2 or 3 extra seconds to get back to
work.
As always, these tips are
all proven techniques that do not include spamming.
Submitting Your Site to
Search Engines
Now that you have spent a
lot of time making your site ready for the world to view, you have to get
it out their for them to find. You have added your Meta tags and
placed your titles on the pages, the next step is to submit.
You can do this by hiring
someone to do it for you, or doing it yourself. When hiring someone to
you should make sure that they provide you with a list of the search engines
and directories that they have submitted your site to and that the fee
is one that is within your budget. This kind of service can save you time,
money and some frustration in learning the proper steps when you are trying
to run your business.
If you have the time, submitting
it yourself can be a good option. There are a few ways to get this process
done yourself.
- Use an online service like submitit.com
to submit your sites.
- Go to each individual search
engine and submit it yourself
- Purchase software to submit
your site from your computer.
Some things to remember in this
process is that approximately 95% of all searches done on the Internet
are done with the top 5 to ten search engines and directories. A few of
the top search engines and directories would be:
- Google
- Alta Vista
- Yahoo
- Lycos
- Infoseek
- Hotbot
- Excite
Many of the smaller search engines
will use the database from one of these larger search engines. So if you’re
in these, then you are in the others. However, because of the way that
different search engines rank their listings, it is a good idea to submit
your site to many engines to improve your exposure and link popularity.
OneDog.com can provide ongoing
submission and ranking services for your business. For more information

Using a Multisubmit Approach
A multisubmit approach is
a slightly more intensive approach to submitting your site to search engines.
What this approach entails is to take a look at your site and consider
if you have different sections of the site that would stand-alone for their
content from the rest of the site. On the OneDog.com site we have the main
site with all the contact, news, and other information. However, we also
have the Dog House Market and our Marketing articles section. These three
sections of the site could stand-alone for content from each other. So
using a multisubmit approach we would submit each of these sections of
the site to search engines separately.
Once you have these areas of your
site defined and the proper Meta tags and keywords added to
each section. Submit the main page of each section to search
engines in the same manner you submitted your main site. However, this process can still be improved upon by learning
more of the finer points of each individual search engine. But
that would take more time then we have in this article.
